New humidity sensor installed today. Outdoor humidity, dew point and cloud base height now recording normally.

Peter, It's a constant problem - and not only on websites. Victorian writers were perhaps the worst - if they didn't know the answer they just made it up as they went along. Checking everything just makes life more difficult and no-one gets it all right.

I find it remarkable that the clubhouse survived two World Wars intact - particularly when you consider that not only the old pavilion was hit but also several of the large houses down the Esplanade and one or two in Cleveland Road. Some while ago someone told me that the white RN Ensign that flew over the clubhouse during WW1 was hanging in a church somewhere in the Midlands. I can remember when I was told - but not who told me or the name of the town, beyond a vague recollection that it was somewhere like Sutton Coldfield. Irritating things memories.

Commodore Ellison 'lent' the club the letter box made from a German WW1 torpedo hat sits on its own table on the first floor rotunda. It may well be he 'lent' the church his white ensign. Fifty or so years ago, the Ellison family asked for the return of the torpedo - but didn't get it!

The weather station's humidity sensor is currently out of action, also affecting the calculation of dew point and cloud base height. I am investigating the fault and have the matter in hand.

Thanks for the correction Jamie. This item was prompted by a photo of the Pavilion posted on the 2008 Squib Nationals website, the caption to which appeared to be saying that it was of the old RNSYC clubhouse! The incorrect info about the Pavilion's demise in WW2 was on another website. Moral: beware of fiction masquerading as fact when surfing the worldwide web.

Close. The old Pier Pavillion was hit by the Imperial German Navy in 1916 - but damage was internal. It was being used at the time as Commodore Ellison RN's Lowestoft HQ. This lovely old building began to be demolished in 1953 to make way for the extraordinarily ugly replacement. Jamie

Re. total annual rainfall: the station recorded 18.69 ins for the calendar year 2007, which is 17% below the average annual rainfall of 22.69 ins for the latest complete 30-year standard period 1971-2000.
Units: pressure in mb; temperature in °C; wind speed in knots; rainfall in ins.

Car parking at the club is frankly a mess that would beneifit from some management attention. Here are some observations:

The general standard of surfacing is inadequate.
It's very difficult to justify leaving containers on the car park with an oversized clubhouse.
Whilst the area of the marina office can't be used for car parking, it is unsightly and spreads the small boats further into potential areas for car parking.
The double garage should be demolished.
The fuel tanks should have been put underground.
The changing room conversion of the old Dragon store carried out ten or twelve years ago was to a low standard - which is now becoming obvious. The location also prevents 'clean sweep' access by vehicles to the club premises.

Since we live in grant land, it may be possible to:
Demolish the existing changing room extension (more contentiously, I'd also like to see the 1930s, flat roofed, Mixed Room extension demolished too. English Heritage are likely to agree to returning the building to original). A by product of this would be another, large first- floor function room as originally drawn by re-joining the Billiard Room with the old Ladies Boudoir - now part of Tommy Knott's flat. Oh joy, the Dining Room would even have another large, Diocletian window re-fitted to the west wall to permit more air and light. Also trim kitchen back to original size.

Erect a new two storey building againts the fence beside the existing double garage. Marina Office on first floor looking out over harbour - public access by outside stair from ground. Bosuns store to rear of first floor.

Changing/ laundry facilities on gound floor and if we can run to it, fuel tanks underground.

Total resurface. Bitmac is OK but concrete may be required for HGV accessed areas & entrance.

Some fairly basic calculations indicate this might free another 20 car park spaces, not to mention reduce the heart dropping everytime a member drives into the car park.

Profitability of the House will be closely related to the number of cars that can be accommodated. We need more and better car parking spaces and simultaneously to make more effective use of the considerable space available inside the clubhouse.

The club may also wish to consider acquisition of some quay heading beside Lake Lothing for winter storage, even summer working on members yachts. This would look a great deal more sightly and maintain the number of car parking spaces available throughout the winter.

Food for thought I hope. Jamie
