FAQ: Adding a new Landfall
What is the Landfalls forum?

The Landfalls forum is a place for sharing information about cruising ports of call, with comments on navigation, anchorages, marinas, restaurants, chandlery, local attractions, or whatever. If you have photos, all the better. They can either be included in your post or (preferably) uploaded to the Landfalls photo gallery with links there and back.

How do I set up a new Landfall entry?

Start by putting your photos on the website:
1. PM or email either Lyn or myself to have us set up a new, appropriately named Landfalls photo album;
2. Prepare your photos for upload (see “FAQ: Using the photo gallery” for tips on this part of the process);
3. Once the new album has been set up, upload the photos to it (decide which photo you want as the album thumbnail and be sure to load that first);
4. Go to the Landfalls gallery and open the new album; you should see a blue title bar with the name of the album (e.g. “Wells-next-the-Sea”) and thumbnails of all the uploaded images;
5. RIGHT CLICK on the blue title bar, then on Properties, and make a note of the album URL; it will be similar to "http://www.rnsyc.net/cpg149/thumbnails.php?album=11".

Next set up the corresponding forum:
6. Click on the Forum link and open the Landfalls forum; click on New Thread;
7. Put the name of your “landfall” (e.g. Wells-next-the Sea) in the Subject box, then enter your text;
8. Add a link to the photo album by typing in the following code: Go to the photo album where, in place of the hashes, you put the URL of the corresponding photo album (see 5 above). You don’t need to use “Go to the photo album” as the text of the link; substitute whatever text you prefer, e.g. ….######]Click here for more album photos of Wells-next-the Sea;
9. Preview the entry, make any necessary changes, then click on Post Thread;
10. Now click on Return to Thread and, when the thread has loaded, make a note of the page URL; it will be similar to "http://www.rnsyc.net/forum/viewthread.php?forum_id=12&thread_id=9".

Finally, return to the photo album and add the link back to the new forum:
11. Click on the Photo Gallery link and open the Landfalls gallery;
12. Locate the appropriate photo album, e.g. Wells-next-the Sea, and click on Edit Files;
13. Type the following code into the Description box of the first photo in the album: Landfalls forum where, in place of the hashes, you put the URL of the corresponding forum thread (see 10 above). Once again, you can use different text for the link if you prefer. If you want to make it possible to return to the forum from any photo in the album, copy and paste the code into each Description box in turn;
14. Click on Apply Modifications to save the links.

NB: Due to a recently identified security issue, active links such as these from the gallery to the forum have been disabled. To access the appropriate forum page it is now necessary to open a new browser window and manually enter the link into the address bar. Instead of an active link, steps 11 to 14 above add a small "down" arrow beside the link text. Hovering your mouse pointer over the arrow reveals the URL to be entered in the address bar.

That’s it! The forum thread and photo album are now set up; further text and photos can always be added later.
