2007 Shakedown Cruise to the RHYC, Woolverstone

(Many thanks to prospective members Nick & Arlene Vikentiou for this account of the RNSYC's shakedown cruise to the Royal Harwich Yacht Club, Woolverstone, over the May Bank Holiday weekend (ed).)

"Having recently applied for membership of the RNSYC, and being keen to take part in activities and meet other members, we put our names on the list for the club's 'shakedown cruise' to Harwich, planned and organised by the Rear Commodore, Stuart Simcox ......

Assurmada 2008
Over Thursday evening and Friday, 5th--6th June, 21 yachts arrived from the Netherlands, to take part in the 11th Assurmada visit. The boats taking part are all crewed by people who have connections with insurance companies in the Netherlands.

On Friday afternoon, everyone gathered for the annual Herring Party, involving lots of Dutch gin and raw herring ...................

AssurMada 2009
On Thursday 14th May, this year's initial AssurMada meeting was held in Rotterdam. Most of the skippers of the boats registered for the crossing, 25 at the latest count, were present. Issues of navigation and safety on the crossing featured large among the topics discussed. The first leg of this year's cruise will be to Woolverstone, ETA p.m. Thursday 11th June. Next day, weather permitting, the fleet will set out for Lowestoft and the RNSYC.
Following the "official opening", the Lowestoft program will get under way in now traditional fashion with the Delta Lloyd herring party. This year, one of the sponsors, D-Risk, has equipped every participating boat with a so-called ‘Track and Trace’ device to record each one's course and speed. As is to be expected, the results of this exercise will be presented with great ceremony! On Saturday, skippers and crews will visit the Suffolk Game and Country Fair. Preceding the Allianz BBQ, Jamie Campbell, author of an excellent new book on the subject, will give a talk on the 150-year history of the RNSYC. Dinner will be followed by a homeward bound party in the club.
On Sunday morning, after the Schouten Insurance International breakfast, all will head home again, hopefully to arrive safe and sound on Monday morning.

End-of Season Meet at Southwold

It seemed to come around so quickly this year, but here it was, the final club meet of the year. Some of us being lucky enough to have the Friday off work, we left for Southwold at 1500 hrs that afternoon. The sea was flat and the sun warm. Silver Cloud was first in followed by Aquafrolic and then Blanche, mooring instructions being issued by Mark the Harbour Master as we approached. We found ourselves mooring up alongside Maud B, David having been there for two days already. All tied up and settled by 1630 hrs, we were then joined by Mr Solitude. Later that evening some of us walked up into the town for a very pleasant meal together in the Red Lion pub. A torch-light walk back to the boats ended a great day ......

Help with seasickness

This is an edited version of Stuart Simcox's article originally posted on the old members-only forum.

I noticed someone was asking about seasickness Hope this is of some help.
(1) Seasickness is caused by the inner ear mechanism that tells you which way up you are being in conflict with what your eyes are telling you. This is why looking at the horizon usually works, as it allows your brain to work out what's going on from a fixed visual reference. This is one reason why anyone who feels a bout of mal-de-mer coming on should quickly get himself or herself into the cockpit. If you have to stay below, then stay horizontal, in your bunk with your eyes closed so there is no conflicting ....

The Baltic in Wandering Star II
After years of sailing on the East Coast, latterly based in Southwold, we decided to try a change: in 2007 we set off from Lowestoft and sailed to Denmark, where we have kept the boat for the last two years.
2007 was spent firstly getting there, via the Frisians and Kiel Canal, and then exploring close to our base.
In 2008 we sailed up the SW coast of Sweden and back. covering around 750 miles.
Details can be seen on our web site:
