Assurmada 2008
Over Thursday evening and Friday, 5th--6th June, 21 yachts arrived from the Netherlands, to take part in the 11th Assurmada visit. The boats taking part are all crewed by people who have connections with insurance companies in the Netherlands.

On Friday afternoon, everyone gathered for the annual Herring Party, involving lots of Dutch gin and raw herring; this also acts as a “getting to know each other” session for the group, and people are given the program for the weekend. In the evening Andrew served fish and chips for us all, after which most of the crews made their way round to Fishermans Wharf for the karaoke. There were a few hardy souls who also managed to take in Notleys and the Harbour Inn afterwards.

On Saturday, after a full breakfast in the club, the group gathered on the South Pier to watch a demonstration by the RNLI and the Dutch rescue service KRNM, followed by a Sea Safety talk on the correct use of lifejackets. In the evening there was a BBQ and a few speeches and presentations, including a cheque for £500 for the RNLI. There was also a very good traditional jazz band playing at various times during event.

Sunday dawned bright and sunny, which made up for the previous days’ grotty weather. The crews gathered for a continental breakfast, to draw body and soul together after their partying the night before, As one RNSYC member was heard to comment, ”they certainly know how to party.
Throughout the morning boats were heading off back to their various home ports, and another great weekend was drawing to a close. “Thank goodness”, said my liver.
